Over one hundred events and activities around the state during Queensland Child Protection Week 1-7 September 2013
will highlight the part parents, carers and the community can play in protecting children and young people.

A confronting Queensland Child Protection Week and NAPCAN Community Services Announcement airing on Network 7 will also highlight the role parents and carers and the community can play in being a positive influence on children’s lives.

Queensland Child Protection Week 2013 is staging a state-wide calendar of events in metropolitan and regional
Queensland including:

  • the Queensland Child Protection Week Awards Ceremony and the launch of Child Protection Week 2013 at Parliament House on 29 August;
  • a Remembrance Ceremony in Brisbane on 4 September; and
  • an extensive program of community events focussed on the protection of children and young people from abuse
    and neglect.

The Queensland Child Protection Week Awards acknowledge the outstanding work of individuals and organisations in the protection of children and young people in Queensland.

The community events include children’s activities, information sessions, barbeque breakfasts and family fun days.

Queensland Child Protection Week Chair, Kelly Bucknall, said schools, libraries, domestic violence services, child protection groups, neighbourhood centres, youth groups, PCYCs, churches, child care centres, Indigenous and foster care organisations were staging events in Queensland Child Protection Week 2013.

“The message of Queensland Child Protection Week is: ‘Protecting children is everybody’s business – play your part.’ This is reflected in the diversity of grass roots organisations and activities throughout the week,” Ms Bucknall said.  “In the midst of negative headlines on child safety, Queensland Child Protection Week 2013 highlights the way the child
protection system is working and the outstanding work being done to keep children and young people safe.”

Child Protection Week events receive more than $105,000 in Queensland Government funding to promote the message that protecting children and young people is everybody’s business.
